History
General
The future was starting to look idylic for the Human race. Colonization and Terraforming of Mars and Venus has given mankind access to vast new areas to populate and develop while access to space meant that the potential access to unlimited resources was in reach. Genetic engineering advanced to the point that a new, physically superior, race was created, the Neo Sapiens. The need for military force diminished as humanity found peace. But the peace people thought was their for the taking wasn't to last. The Neo Sapiens eventually rebelled against their masters and demanded their freedom. The bulk of the fighting during the Neo Sapien Rebellion was centred on and above Mars with sporadic fighting on Venus. For ten months the fighting came to a standstill. It was the development of the military Exo Frame that changed the war. With it a soldier could carry heavier armour and weapons than the Neo Sapiens could. The newly created Exo Frames were quickly rushed to the front lines both in space and on the ground. It allowed Fleet personnel to match the superior physical capabilities of the Neo Sapiens and finally break the deadlock of the war. It was two months later when the Fleet captured the leaders of the Neo Sapiens and ended the rebellion. The newly created Exo Fleet, so called due to it's reliance on Exo Frame technology, stood unchallenged in the system.
For fifty years mankind enjoyed a golden age. One built on the might of the Fleet, the marginalization of the Neo Sapiens, and the exclusion of the Pirate Clans, the descendants of prisoners originally sent to the outer system for mining duties. The Pirates have not come inside of the Asteroid Belt and are typically held at bay by the Exo Fleet, while the Neo Sapiens are content with having Mars to themselves as second class citizens. With no one to fight, the members of the Exo Fleet are just lazy bums sucking money and resources from where they belong, in the hands of the hard working people who actually earned them. Many people now see the Exo Fleet as a needless waste of money. The Exo Fleet rests on the laurels of it's past victories, and undeservedly calls itself the protector of Humanity. So says general public opinion.
The Golden Age
The Golden age of man began in the mid to late 21st Century. Advances in technology allowed humanity to finally find peace. Fusion power became cheap, reliable, and easily accessible. It was used everywhere, from the hand sized fusion batteries through Fusion packs up to the Fusion Reactors that could power entire cities. With war a thing of the past, humanity reached out to the stars. Terraforming began on Venus and Mars, essentially turning them from dead, hostile worlds into living, breathing worlds where a man could live, even if they were still harsh worlds. To aid in the terraformation of Venus and Mars, the humans created Exo Frame technology. An Exo Frame was a mechanical skeleton one could wear that allowed him to lift and move much heavier things than before. To support the Terraformation efforts, criminals were shipped to the outer system in large numbers to mine the moons of Saturn for resources the Homeworlds would need. They were given the promise of a full pardon and colonization rights to the Outer system in return. Instead, most of them died in the mines, and the rest were abandoned when the mines were closed. Later, Exo Frame equipped workers were replaced by genetically engineered slave labour, the Neo Sapiens. The Neo Sapiens were used primarily on Mars, although a small number were also used on Venus. Neo Sapiens were designed to be physically superior to Humans, now calling themselves Terrans. Neo Sapiens were larger, tougher, far stronger, had superior hearing and sight, and are predisposed to more logical thinking than Terrans. They are less adaptable to new situations, and are sterilized when they are created so they cannot have children of their own. For decades, they were used, and even abused, by their Terran owners, many whom saw them as mere animals.
Neo Sapien Rebellion
The Neo Sapien Rebellion began in 2069 in a small mine on Mars. One day everything seemed to be working normally, the next day all contact with the mine was cut off. Before anyone knew what was going on Neo Sapiens from all over Mars had overwhelmed the planet and captured large numbers of weapons. The rebellion quickly spread to Venus itself, and many Terrans were killed in the violent uprising. Despite that, due to the much higher Neo Sapien poplation on Mars it was the center of the majority of the fighting. Both the Neo Sapiens and Terrans were quick to put weapons on as many vehicles as they could to create weapons of war. The Terrans even armed their industrial Exo Frames with heavy weapons and high strength claws instead of grippers so they could fight the Neo Sapiens on mostly even terms. They eventually created the Cyberlink, an implant that allowed a computer to connect to a plug at the base of the person's skull so they could control a machine with thought. With it the Exo Frames became much smaller and mimicked the movements of the person wearing it, instead of having to be operated by hand controls. Combat E-Frames, combined with drastically superior numbers, allowed the Terrans to quickly put an end to the Neo Sapien Rebellion.
Post Rebellion Era
For the first time in over a century, the Terrans had a military force. Just when it seemed that they would no longer be required, ships in the outer system started disappearing. Instead of disbanding the military, dubbed the Exo Fleet for it's heavy reliance on Exo Frames during the Neo Sapien Rebellion, it was sent out to investigate the disappearances. What they found was beyond their expectations. Pirates. The criminals that were abandoned in the outer system to die had in fact not only survived, but thrived. They had initially repaired a few nearly destroyed shuttles that were left behind, and from there began to plunder Homeworld ships for what they needed, or wanted. There were few survivors of these attacks. As news of the Pirates spread through the Homeworlds, travel to the outer system dropped, and eventually the Exo Fleet stopped operating beyond the Asteroid belt. For the past fifty years the Exo Fleet and the Pirate Clans have engaged in minor skirmishes along the Asteroid Belt. The Neo Sapiens, during the same past fifty years, had finally been granted a measure of freedom by the Terrans, but as still prejudiced against and are generally treated as second class citizens. They now have governorship of Mars where most of them live. While the Neo Sapiens are allowed to maintain their own military it is limited primarily to infantry and light vehicles, with access to E-Frames and Space Ships illegal for the Martian Commonwealth. Many Terrans still don't like or trust Neo Sapiens though, and no small number believe that they should all be destroyed.
